Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
