Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
