Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism after their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the Pope's choice to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the problem.

Global Strict Policy Pushed

The organization is pushing for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is found guilty of abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the United States.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in spring, has inherited this longstanding problem that has haunted the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist shared they were victimized by a clergy member who was later moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we want to collaborate with him," Hickey stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven members of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from over thirty countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their own story and appeared "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and receptive and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with experts and gathered materials that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent church-ordered report highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or negligence."

The document also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, uniting and establishing a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the right direction," they stated.

Hickey concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
