The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
