Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
